How and Why to Be an Employer Focused Candidate

With so many candidates in the applicant pool in the sluggish economy, employers have the pick of the litter. Therefore, you have to work extra hard to impress and prove that they need you. Frankly, they don’t care whether you are seeking a “growing company” or “opportunity for advancement”. What they are concerned with is their bottom line and whether you can enhance it. What you need to do is tailor your skills, experience, and education on your resume to make you precisely the candidate they are seeking. This is how you build employer-focused documents, by showing and proving the value you offer.

  1. Profile Statement. Throw out the outdated “Objective” in your resume. It is job applicant-based, usually stating what kind of ideal work environment you seek and how you want to grow and attain more skills there. That is not employer-based. Instead, you need a brief paragraph summarizing your relevant skills, experience, and a significant achievement or two in the areas the position is centered around. It summarizes the value you offer the company.
  2. Include awards, accomplishments, and special achievements in your resume. These shout to employers that your skills have been proven to be effective. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. If you have been notably successful in your past positions, employers assume that you will also be in the future. Significant accomplishments, especially a track record of them, make you a wanted candidate.
  3. Make your cover letter employer-focused as well. Do not begin your cover letter with why you want to work for the company addressed. Begin with a powerful statement about why you are a dynamite employee with proven results, but be careful to avoid sounding egotistical. It’s okay to work in your reasons for applying there briefly, especially if it adds to your attractiveness, but make it a sentence or two later in the letter.
  4. Ask questions during and at the conclusion of the interview. It’s all about them. The interview is about you, and yet mostly about them. Asking questions demonstrates genuine interest in the position rather than offering yourself as a job seeker looking for anything you can get. Refrain from excessive questioning though; allow them to direct the course of the interview and ask the questions they have for you. Weaving in positive information you know about the company from your research about them also demonstrates initiative on your part to research what you are getting into with that company.
  5. Send a follow-up letter or thank-you note to each person involved in the interview. Show them that you appreciate the opportunity to have interviewed and continue to be interested in opportunities there. Briefly, re-state your value and thank them for their consideration. If you are not good with remembering names, ask for a business card from each person at the interview.

This is an employer’s market, requiring that you do all you can to impress and stand out from other candidates. This requires conveying the positive attributes you offer in a manner that fits with your target company’s purpose, product, and available position without making your communication on what your ideal position or company would be. Focus instead on them and what they seek and your efforts will get you better results.

5 Reasons Why Someone Else Might Get the Job Instead of You

Imagine that there are number of candidates for a particular job and all of the candidates have similar education and experience. Without a doubt, the choice is going to be difficult. Now let’s imagine that of all who are applying for the position, one candidate in particular has strong communication skills. Who do you think will get the job? Naturally, the individual who has good communication skills will be the winner in this situation.

How good are your presentation/communication skills? Do you sound as dynamic as you look? Do you sound as impressive as your resume may look?

There is no doubt that standing out from the crowd is more important than ever in today’s declining job market. Competition is fierce.

Do others ever:

  1. ask you to repeat yourself because you are soft-spoken?
  2. tell you that you speak in a monotone?
  3. ask you to slow down when you speak?
  4. seem uninterested when you try to explain something or relay a story?
  5. tell you they don’t understand what you are saying because of an accent or dialect?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then you should seriously consider what impression you are making in the job interview. The most important thing you need to do when being interviewed for a job is to sell yourself. And, any one of the above characteristics will sell you short because there is an excellent chance that another candidate will be stronger in his/her communication skills.

You must be understood the first time you say it. If a prospective boss constantly asks you to repeat yourself because you speak too softly or because of an accent, you have a problem. If your voice is a monotone, then you are boring. If you talk too quickly, your message is not getting through. And, if you have difficulty putting your thoughts into verbal speech, then the message being sent is uninteresting and hard to follow.

Good communication skills require you to speak with confidence, be heard the first time you say it, have total control over your speed, and articulate your thoughts clearly and distinctly.

One means of solving the above problems is by means of voice training. In addition to working on your volume, your diction, and the life/emotion in your voice, voice training means you will discover a deeper, resonant, more mature sound which I refer to as your ‘real’ voice. Powered by your chest cavity, it can make all the difference in who gets selected.

Don’t let your lack of good communication skills be the determining factor in who gets the job.

This gas course can tailor the students to the dynamical opportunities that exist in the ongoing transformation of the global energy industry. Existing energy sources and the infrastructures that deliver the users around the world, which are undergoing a period of rapid change. Limits to growth, rapidly wavering raw material prices, and the growth of new technology options are contributed to heightened risk and opportunity in the energy sector. By theoretical and practical insights of the process of gas course, energy technologies are developed, financed, and deployed. A classroom component of lectures, readings, and exercises precedes the field trip. This course seeks to highlight the root drivers for change in the energy industry, the technologies that are emerging, and the factors that will influence success in their commercialization. In Gas Courses Bradford, the students can gain the broad concepts that include externalities, public goods, property rights, market failure, and benefit-cost analysis. These concepts are applied to a number of areas that include nonrenewable resources, air and water pollution, solid waste management, and wild substances. This course provides a blend of theoretical conceptions and practical experience as they relate to emerging clean-tech businesses.

The clean-tech industry is dynamic and changing, with new companies appearing every day, but like most entrepreneurial organizations clean-tech companies are often cash and resource poor. The course providers emphasize to analyze the optimal role for public policy. The goal of this course is to analyze the impact of the human enterprise on the world that sustains it. This Gas Courses Bradford draws interest on the roles of natural setting energy use and material flow, techniques of food production, dietary choices and development and conservation strategies. The research undermines the gas industry’s long-standing claim that natural gas is a clean energy source. But people who live in gas-drilling areas already have concerns. Students develop a number of core advocacy competencies, such as counseling clients, spotting issues, conducting factual investigations, performing practical legal research, advocating through written and oral communications, planning cases, managing time, and addressing ethical issues and perplexities.

In addition, Gas Courses Bradford assists students to develop an appreciation for the range of strategic and tactical approaches that effective advocates use. Some matters will be best resolved in front of a judge, others in an adversarial hearing, others through face-to-face meetings with government officials, and others by putting public pressure on a polluter or administrative agency. Finally, we seek to understand the role of international institutions in channeling gas energy for peaceful purposes, in preventing national regulations to address the growing international trade in gas technology and materials. The aim of the course is to give you the tools for distinguishing between sense and nonsense when confronted by technology-based arguments. The course will also analyze existing policies in the transportation and energy sectors. Most of the course topics are based on energy – its generation, distribution, use, and abuse – but depending on students’ interests, we may also go to the depth of the other discussions, such as transportation and national security.

How to Get Hired Quickly Through a Home Depot Jobs Application

Many job applicants mistakenly believe all they have to do is submit a Home Depot jobs application online and the company will come calling to set up an interview. While the online application system Home Depot has set up is very efficient, it doesn’t automatically mean that you will get a call back to get the chance at a job you so desire.

These days, there are just way too many applicants trying to get the same job that you are. What does this mean for you? It simply means that you’re going to have to make yourself stand out far apart from the rest of the crowd.

Prior to applying at Home Depot you need to visit their website and look and see the types of jobs that suit your qualifications and/or experience. Keep in mind there are many entry-level job apart opportunities and it makes perfect sense to familiarize yourself with the way the store operates. Later, when it comes time for the interview, you’re going to make a much better impression if you know something about the company. You would be surprised at how many people don’t know anything about Home Depot as they sit there in front of the interviewer.

Also, before you apply, you need to visit the store where you’re hoping to find a job. Ask to speak to the manager or someone in human resources and introduce yourself. Let the supervisors know that you intend to fill out the Home Depot application and that you would love to hear any tips they can give you for the hiring process. If you make a good first impression, chances are they will remember you. When you follow up later on after applying online you can follow up in person at the same store and reconnect with these people so that you can have a better chance of getting hired.

The importance of following up on your Home Depot jobs application cannot be understated. If you don’t check up on the status of your application within two weeks after applying online, you will possibly get lost in the shuffle. With so many job applications received by any retail company, there is an extensive screening process that goes on behind the scenes.

However, if you follow up on your application, you just might be able to give it a little nudge so that it ends further to the top of the pile. This will ensure that you have the maximum chance of getting contacted to set up an interview.

More Insight in Less Time For Recruiters

Dear Recruiter,

Do you go into an interview with a plan in your mind? Or do you just decide to wing it most of the times? If you are like most recruiters, you will have taken both approaches at some point of time. Think back to those occasions and try to recollect which interview went better and got you more insight in a shorter time!

Chances are very high that you will remember the planned interviews having been shorter and better. It has been observed that preparing for an interview for as little as 15 minutes can cut the interview duration by up to 60 minutes. So, if you want a more meaningful evaluation of an employee in a short duration interview, here are a few things you can do:-

  1. Split your job requirements into “Must-have” skills and “Good-to-have” skills. Go through the candidate’s resume and put a tick against all the tangible skills she has listed on her resume.
  2. Note down all the information that you need to collect to make a decision on whether to hire the candidate or not. This includes information about work skills, soft skills, location preferences, flexibility and salary requirements.
  3. Create the questions which will help you elicit this information. Remember, the key to getting more accurate information is to get the candidate to express his thoughts rather than give a simple Yes-No answer. Follow up the candidate’s answer with more questions if required to get specifics.
Some examples of such open-ended questions are:-
    a. Please describe your relationship with your immediate boss
Insight: Candidate’s initiative and need for supervision
    b. Please tell us about a hectic period of your job
Insight: Candidate’s ability to multitask and handle stress

There is also a strong case for going beyond the resume to seek out the facets of the candidate’s personality which determine suitability for the job. This is especially true in the case of startup hiring. That will be the subject of our next post on this blog.

If you have any more tips to make the interview shorter yet better, please comment and share with us.

Writing Resume With Background Checks in Mind

It’s an understatement to say the current job market is competitive. When hundreds of candidates are applying for a single opening, you need to stand out. But how? Experience and education ought to speak for themselves, but often a potential employer wants more. Essentially, he or she wants to see how far a candidate will go for the position. Going the extra mile, in this case, should be about presentation – who you are and what you can do. Embellishing your resume, on the other hand, can sully your overall image when a background check is conducted.

95 percent of all hiring employers conduct background checks on candidates at various stages of the application process. While not all screening are identical, employers go after key points of information: your employment, education, and criminal histories. Although examining criminal history is self-explanatory, verifying education and employment histories is not as clear.

Ultimately, an employer wants your resume or online application to align with the background check. Any variations or omissions make a candidate appear not as honest and reliable. In these portions of background checks, your employment dates, job titles, duties, and salaries are examined, and for education, your degree, GPA, major, and graduation dates are all compared. Because of the competition, minor discrepancies can remove a candidate from the application pool.

What can you do to have a greater chance of staying in? First, embellishment only take you so far, and any stretched facts are often exposed when a background check is conducted. The first level of achieving symmetry between your resume and a background check is screening yourself. Personal background checks essentially reveal what a potential employer will be seeing. If, however, information is not fully accurate, you may need to investigate the errors on your own or speak with the background check company; because of similarities in names and identity theft, background check results might not fully reflect your history.

From here, address the content on your resume. Are all job titles, and their corresponding duties, precise? Do your dates of employment match those of your previous workplaces? Is all past education information, including unfinished degrees and minors, included? As you comb through each aspect of your history, think about what the potential employer wants and what the hiring manager will see.

Find the Perfect Higher Education Job for You

If you’re planning a career in education, chances are you’ve thought about what you want your career path to be. It can be frustrating, once you’ve pinpointed that path, to be unable to find that perfect position to fit your vision.

You may want to contact an Education Staffing Agency. An experienced education recruiter can act as a matchmaker between you and the institutions of higher learning in your area. Education headhunters not only make sure they find the best candidate for the schools they represent, but they also get to know you, the job seeker, in order to find the right work environment for you. Everything from the type of supervision you prefer to the benefits you seek will be taken into consideration by your higher education search firm in order to match you with a job that will work for you.

For you, the job seeker, it’s important to find an education recruitment agency that specializes in higher education. These education head hunters generally have ongoing relationships with colleges in your area and may even know in your first meeting where you’ll fit best. Additionally, experienced education headhunters keep an updated list of openings at local institutions of higher learning, giving you an edge you wouldn’t have on your own.

Once you partner with an education headhunter to find your job, it may seem like you have nothing to do but wait for that call. However, this is time you can be using to prepare for any interviews that might be coming your way. Make sure you have an impressive suit, including matching tie and button-down shirt, and make sure it stays dry cleaned and ready to go at all times. You never know when an opportunity may arise, either to interview or attend a networking event. Don’t forget shoes. You’ll need freshly polished matching dress shoes to wear with your suit. Old, scuffed shoes can ruin the look you’re working so hard to achieve.

Speaking of networking events, don’t let the fact that you have an education recruiter deter you from making contacts that could help you land a job in the field. If an opportunity arises to attend an event at your college of choice, put on that suit and attend. Faculty and administration often attend such events and a contact you make could be the “in” you need. Mention any contacts you make to your education recruitment agency.

Once your higher education recruiters line up an interview for you, get to work. In the days leading up to your interview, research, research, research, learning everything you can about the university. Information specifically related to the job for which you’re interviewing could be especially helpful.

One of the education staffing services your education recruiter will likely provide is coaching on your upcoming interview. Education head hunters are generally familiar with the types of questions you can expect in an interview with a higher education institution and can help you prepare for your big day.

Whether you’re hoping for a career in administration or as a teacher, a future job on a college campus awaits. All you need is to find the right educational headhunters and your dream will become a reality.
